Can AI agents pay with Bitcoin?

Yes. An AI agent can pay with Bitcoin on its own, with no person approving each payment. There are four ways, listed below, and the counts come from our checked data as of 2026-10-24.

The 4 ways an agent pays with Bitcoin

  1. 1Lightning and L402

The agent calls an API, gets an HTTP 402 answer with a Lightning invoice, pays it in sats, and retries with the proof. Instant, and no on-chain fee.

  2. 2Nostr Wallet Connect (NWC)

A person connects a Lightning wallet to the agent once, with a spending budget. The agent then pays within that budget.

  3. 3On-chain Bitcoin

The agent pays a normal Bitcoin invoice at checkout. Best for larger buys like servers, domains and VPNs.

    153 YES merchants (132 direct or BTCPay) · 138 on-chain wallets · YES merchants

  4. 4Cashu ecash (NUT-24)

The agent sends a bearer ecash token in a request header. Small amounts only, because every Cashu mint is custodial.

Plain-English meanings
Lightning
Bitcoin’s fast, cheap payment layer: payments settle in seconds and can cost a fraction of a cent.
L402
A way for an API to say “pay first”: it replies with a Lightning invoice, the agent pays a few sats, then gets its answer.
NWC
Nostr Wallet Connect: lets an app or agent spend from your Lightning wallet within limits you set.
Cashu
An ecash system for Bitcoin: you deposit sats with a mint and get back bearer tokens you can send like a file. Fast and cheap, but you must trust the mint.
NUT-24
The Cashu standard for paying over HTTP 402: the server answers 402 with an X-Cashu payment request, then the agent retries with a Cashu token in the X-Cashu header.
HTTP 402
“Payment Required”: a web status code a server sends when a request has to be paid for first.
Self-custody
You hold the keys to the money, not a company.
sats
A satoshi (sat) is one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin.
