Cashu (ecash) for AI agents
Cashu services checked for whether an AI agent can use them: mints, wallets, MCP servers and APIs that take payment over NUT-24 (HTTP 402). YES = the source states it and, where there is a live endpoint, our free unpaid probe agrees. KINDA = partial, early or experimental. Every row quotes its source; services we could not verify are not listed.

Plain-English meanings (Cashu)
- Cashu
- An ecash system for Bitcoin: you deposit sats with a mint and get back bearer tokens you can send like a file. Fast and cheap, but you must trust the mint.
- Mint
- The server that issues and redeems Cashu ecash. It holds the bitcoin behind your tokens, so it is custodial: if it disappears or is hacked, your ecash can become worthless.
- Ecash
- A bearer token worth some sats: whoever holds it can spend it. Cashu ecash is backed by bitcoin that a mint holds.
- Custodial
- Someone else holds the money for you, and you depend on them to give it back.
- NUT-24
- The Cashu standard for paying over HTTP 402: the server answers 402 with an X-Cashu payment request, then the agent retries with a Cashu token in the X-Cashu header.
- HTTP 402
- “Payment Required”: a web status code a server sends when a request has to be paid for first.
- AI agent
- Software that takes actions for you, such as buying an API call, without a person clicking each step.
Mints17
