Can an AI agent buy things for you?

An AI agent can research and compare almost anything. Paying is the hard part. Some rails let an agent pay on its own. Most “AI shopping” still ends at the merchant’s own checkout, often with a person in the loop. Here is what is actually live, with a source or an honest UNVERIFIED on every row.

Big agent-checkout programs

The table covers the programs most often named in “AI shopping” stories. A program being live does not mean an autonomous agent can finish a purchase at any shop. Status and fees change, and a rate we could not source is marked UNVERIFIED, never guessed.

ProgramStatusWho paysSource
OpenAI Instant Checkout (ACP)
Launched 29 September 2025 with single-item purchases. We read the original OpenAI post and WIRED's March 2026 report on the pivot.
ENDED
Ended for in-chat checkout. OpenAI moved the focus to embedded apps in March 2026; the Agentic Commerce Protocol spec is still public.
Merchants paid a small fee on completed purchases while Instant Checkout was live. Users paid nothing extra. No public rate card was found.

Walmart Sparky
WIRED reported the swap on 18 March 2026 and said conversion on the in-chat version was about three times lower.
LIVE
Live as a Walmart assistant inside ChatGPT and Gemini. The basket syncs with Walmart, and checkout stays on Walmart's side. The in-chat Instant Checkout experiment was dropped.
Walmart builds and runs Sparky. Any per-order agent fee is not published.
fee: UNVERIFIED
WIRED, 18 Mar 2026
Shopify Agentic Storefronts
Active by default for eligible stores. Merchants accept the supplemental agentic storefront terms before selling.
LIVE
Live channel. Products appear in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Direct checkout is on in Google, Copilot and Meta; ChatGPT completes on the merchant's own checkout.
The merchant pays its normal Shopify and payment processing fees. Shopify's help page publishes no separate agent fee.

Shopify Help Center
Amazon Buy for Me / Alexa for Shopping
We could not open a primary Amazon page on 27 October 2026. The row is here for completeness, not as a confirmed status.
UNVERIFIED
UNVERIFIED. Reported as an agent that fills encrypted card and address details on the brand's own site, so checkout stays with the brand.
UNVERIFIED. Reported free for shoppers; any brand fee is not published in a page we could re-read.
fee: UNVERIFIED

Perplexity Instant Buy
PayPal and Perplexity launched it on 25 November 2025. The shopper has to choose PayPal, not a card, to qualify for the launch rewards offer.
LIVE
Live in the US with PayPal. Shoppers check out inside Perplexity; the retailer stays merchant of record.
PayPal processes the payment. The fee split between Perplexity, PayPal and the merchant is not published.

Google AP2 / UCP
AP2 is an extension for A2A and UCP. The v0.2 work moved into the FIDO Alliance. UCP lists Google, Shopify, Etsy, Walmart, Amazon and others as co-developers.
SPEC
Specs, not one live consumer checkout. AP2 signs checkout and payment mandates; UCP covers catalog, cart and checkout. AP2 ships an x402 sample.
No merchant take rate appears in the AP2 or UCP docs we read.
fee: None reported

Visa Intelligent Commerce / Trusted Agent Protocol
The public docs cover RFC 9421 message signatures and an agent public key. Intelligent Commerce is the umbrella; Trusted Agent Protocol is the part with public docs.
DEV
Developer program. Merchants verify signed agent requests with the Trusted Agent Protocol. The protocol docs and sample code are public.
No production fee or terms are published in the docs we read.
fee: UNVERIFIED
Visa developer docs
Mastercard Agent Pay
We could not re-read a primary Mastercard page on 27 October 2026. Treat the row as reported, not confirmed.
UNVERIFIED
UNVERIFIED. Reported as registered agents plus network tokens.
UNVERIFIED. No public agent take rate found.
fee: UNVERIFIED
UNVERIFIED

Source links open the page we read. A source link is not a completed test purchase. We did not invent take rates; where no rate card exists, the fee says UNVERIFIED.

Status labels: LIVE is operating, SPEC is a protocol or spec, DEV is developer docs, ENDED has stopped or moved, and UNVERIFIED means no primary source could be read.

The exact sentences we relied on, and what is still UNVERIFIED
OpenAI Instant Checkout (ACP)
“Merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases, but the service is free for users, doesn’t affect their prices, and doesn’t influence ChatGPT’s product results.”
“Conversion rates ... have been three times lower for the selection sold directly inside the chatbot than those that require clicking out.”
Walmart Sparky
“Walmart’s chatbot, Sparky, will begin operating within ChatGPT—essentially a chatbot inside a chatbot. A similar setup will arrive in Google’s Gemini chatbot next month.”
Shopify Agentic Storefronts
“Agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores.”
Amazon Buy for Me / Alexa for Shopping

No primary source could be read for this row. It is marked UNVERIFIED, not guessed.

Perplexity Instant Buy
“PayPal enables the transaction to happen instantly within the AI interface and keeps the retailer in control as the merchant of record.”
“How it works Browse products on Perplexity and look for items marked "Instant Buy."”
Google AP2 / UCP
“Human Not Present x402. A sample demonstrating an autonomous transaction where the agent acts without human presence, using the x402 protocol for payments.”
“The common language for platforms, agents, and businesses.”

Visa Intelligent Commerce / Trusted Agent Protocol
“a trusted agent will include a message signature in its request to your server.”
Mastercard Agent Pay

No primary source could be read for this row. It is marked UNVERIFIED, not guessed.

Stores an agent can pay with Bitcoin

Of the 151 merchants we marked YES, 18 publish a direct Bitcoin or Lightning route. 132 take Bitcoin through a processor such as BitPay or CoinGate, which usually means a merchant checkout sits in front. 1 YES row is a processor directory entry, not a shop. 59 KINDA rows are gift cards, where a person still redeems the card.

Every merchant name above links to the merchant’s own site. The “our proof” link opens the row in our directory, with the quote we read. We did not place an order at any merchant.

KINDA: gift cards are not agent checkout

These rows are marked KINDA because the recorded route is a crypto gift card. An agent might buy the card. A person still redeems it at the merchant. A sample of 4 of the 59, alphabetical:

Common questions

Can an AI agent buy things for me today?

In narrow cases. An agent can pay a Lightning invoice or an x402 API call on its own. For a normal shop, most checkouts still need your account, your card and often a click from you. Agent checkout programs exist, but several changed or narrowed in 2026.

Is it safe to let an agent use my card?

Only with a scoped credential, not your card number. Agent payments should use a network token or a signed mandate that names the merchant, the amount and the expiry. A raw card number in a prompt or a chat log is not safe. Set a limit and check what the agent can do if it makes a mistake.

Do merchants charge agents a fee?

Sometimes the merchant pays. OpenAI said merchants paid a small fee on completed Instant Checkout purchases, but no public rate card was found. Other programs publish no agent take rate. We mark any fee we cannot source as UNVERIFIED.

What is an agent token?

A payment credential made for one agent and one job. Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol uses signed requests. Mastercard's Agent Pay is reported to use network tokens for registered agents. In both, the token can be limited by merchant, amount or time, so a leak is less useful than a stolen card number.

Can an agent pay with Bitcoin?

Yes, in some places. An agent can pay a Lightning invoice or a direct on-chain address, and can pay x402 APIs in USDC. Most Bitcoin merchants still put a normal checkout in front, so the agent may need a human for the cart. The checked counts are on this page.

Does this page get paid for links?

No. There are no affiliate links on this page. Sources are plain links to the pages we read. If that changes, we will label it.

Get notified when the compare agent launches

We are building a compare agent that checks the store, the rail and the total before it buys. Leave an email and we will write once when it is ready. This uses the same double opt-in list as the weekly update.

There are no affiliate links on this page yet. If we add any, they will be labelled, and they will never change a status, a source or a fee.
